Ayurveda for Glaucoma

 Dr Rajesh Nair

What is glaucoma?

It is a disease, generally associated with the pressure rise inside the eye, certain to lead to blindness if not detected in an early stage.

In a normal eye the watery fluid, aqueous humor, circulates freely and excess goes out through an exit.

In cases of glaucoma, the exit develops some obstruction, and it causes damage to the optic nerve.

According to ayurveda glaucoma is best correlated with a condition described as adhimantha, and is of 4 basic types: vata, pitta, kapha and rakta.

Generally speaking, vata regulates retinal nerve function, whereas kapha specifically nourishes the eye and pitta acts to drain it in context with adhimantha.

Any of these symptoms may require immediate treatment:

o Blurred vision

o Nausea

o Headaches

o Halos around bright lights

o Falling of peripheral vision

o Severe pain

TREATMENT

1) Diet rich in Vitamins and minerals is important to the eye include zinc and copper, antioxidant vitamins C, E, B and A and selenium, an antioxidant mineral.

Foods such as bell peppers, broccoli, citrus fruit, brussel sprouts, guava, kale, parsley and strawberries are recommended.

2) Limit caffeine and alcohol intake. Consume water in small amounts throughout the day.

3) Triphala is also widely taken for early stages of glaucoma and cataracts.

4) Make tea with one teaspoon of punarnava in one cup of hot water for two minutes.

Strain the tea until there's no punarnava in the water, then drink the tea two to three times a day, this helps in treating glaucoma.

5) The oil massage can reduce stress hormones, which are known to raise IOP.

6) Exposure to natural sunlight will help regulate the body's natural cycle.

7) Going to bed early and at the same time each night will help the body.

8) Daily exercise and meditation will definitely have effect.

9) Rest your eyes by avoiding strain by watching television, working on the computer, driving and reading.

10) If the patient is constipated, bowel regulation can be helpful.

11) Glaucotin is a natural medicine formulated specifically to treat Glaucoma
